Recipe for The Perfect Cake Show

Recipe for The Perfect Cake Show.

This Blog is Really Dusty

It has been some time, I realize.  I’ve been under the weather, out of sorts and generally up to my neck in personal drama for the past several months.  My teeth are my current enemy and they fight dirty (no matter how many times I blast them with fluoride and burning mint-less mouth wash).

I have been continuing my pursuit of writing for a living, but the going is slow.  I continue to write, pretty much daily, and I get paid for most of it, so that is definitely progress from when I started this baby.  I haven’t tried to send out a manuscript in a while because of all those issues I mentioned above, but I have been working on my fiction, still.

Got2BeGreen is still chugging along, and I continue to be pleased by my association with them.  I am now a Featured Craft Contributor on AC, which means I have to publish 1 crafting article per month that is not an assignment, like this one on Papier-mâché, and I get 3 craft assignments per month.  I also continue writing at TB, though I am not generally acknowledged on the final product.  That’s ok.  I don’t write for the recognition, really.  I write for writing.  I get paid to do what I love.  I don’t need to engrave it.  It’s really, really great when I can, but I don’t have to.

I am still in frequent contact with my sponsored child, still making odd things and cooking lots of brilliant yummies from scratch, like sour dough bread and molten chocolate cakes (which taste like they are made from the tears of angels and unicorn laughter, but are not) and strawberry cake with clotted cream & berry filling…is it me or is it hungry in here?

I have learned a new craft or two, made a few new friends, and read many books.

(Lindsey – sorry I didn’t get a chance to respond sooner.  My blogroll is really for me, so I put them under names that are significant to me, so I’ll remember what they are.  Thanks.)

I’m Back! Did you miss me?

Well, as someone was kind enough to point out, it has been a while since I have posted here.  I haven’t even been posting my AC articles because, for one thing, it is terribly inconvenient the way they have it set up now (auto-posting stopped working some months ago and is apparently low on their priority list).  For another, in mid-November, I ended up in the hospital with cellulitis and didn’t get much of anything done for that month except Thanksgiving, not even writing many AC articles, so there wasn’t a lot to post.  I intend to post what I did write over the next few days, though.

However, I have been writing since I last posted.  On one of the other sites for which I write, I have advanced to receiving direct orders from clients.  Not a lot yet, but enough so that I feel some justification that I am moving in the right direction.  AC has been slow with the paying articles, but my performance payments have started to increase, so it has sort of evened out.  TB, on the other hand, has been getting more articles than when I first signed up, and I’ve just been really pleased with them in general.  When they got a big influx of writers while orders were lower, they actually froze their intake of authors, so that their existing writers would have assignments.

I’ve hardly written for the 4th website at all, and not for months because you don’t get to claim any assignments, you all just vie for the same ones.  Very competitive and the articles are often ones I wouldn’t want to write for that price, anyway.

And then there is Got2BeGreen.  Still happy I stumbled across their ad (nearly a year ago!).  I think my interview with them was my last article posting on here, actually.  I better get those posted, too.  That reminds me, I’ve got to get an article done for them this week.

It has been some time, I know.  I’ve been busy writing for a living, rather than writing about my attempts to write for a living.  Last night I received an email, rejecting my story submission, the one I had written for my Compassion Int’l sponsored child.  If you are a book editor at a publishing house, here is a tip:  Devastation is best served on a Monday morning, when one expects unpleasant events and for everything to go wrong, and is worst served on a Friday evening when it could potentially destroy the mood of an entire weekend.  Make no mistake, a rejection is devastating, no matter how nice your letter may be.

The letter wasn’t the only surprise.

New writing stuff

Is anyone reading my Got 2 Be Green page/articles?  If you are, leave comments so I know you’re there, ok?

Let’s see,  I’ve actually sold some writing to the other places I’ve been trying out, so that is good.  I did get a few things rejected, which is bad, but I’ve realized what I did incorrectly and I think fixed those things and should have better results this time.  I learned that one of the places actually pays very decently for the writing, which is why their standards are so high, and that is a nice change (as well as a nice chunk of change =) ).

One of the places I am trying out has a rather extensive entry process. You have to watch a video and study and take a test in order to be accepted.  Then you are working with actual clients and not just the website.  They are sort of like an online temp agency or employment agency, really.  They take a cut for a certain period, but after that you can work directly with the client, fee free.

None of the ones I am trying out have a pay per page view system.  It is all upfront.  In 2 of the 3 cases, no big, as the upfront is decent.  In the other case, the requirements as far as word count are fairly low, so writing several articles in a short period should be easy enough to earn the money.

I’m not giving names of the sites yet because I want to work with them for a bit and really see if they are good, which is better, etc, first before I give them free advertising.

In nonwriting news, I sold a felted piece, which I’m happy about.  My sponsored child will be, too.

Other than that, I’ve been doing a lot of cooking.  A LOT.  My cold soup is quite lovely, if I do say so.

Writing Frustrations – is AC still for me?

It has been a frustrating couple of weeks on the publishing front.  Writing for Associated Content has been extremely unsatisfying lately.  They’ve had few assignments except audio or video, the assignments they have had are paying less, I’m suddenly having most articles rejected, and the one they actually accepted they offered a pittance to publish.  This, coming on the heels of that page view fiasco a few weeks ago, it is just really disheartening.  It’s not like they were ever a career path, but they were a way to keep myself afloat while I pursued other avenues of publication.

So I’ve spent the last few days finding other ways to make some money by doing what I do.  Today, I got quite a bit done to that end, submitting several articles to one site and signing up for another (I have to wait for approval on that one before I can write anything).  I also went ahead and submitted another to AC, but if they offer me less than $3 again…

Later the following day…Started writing that yesterday, but got interrupted and never got back.  Today, I got insulted in an AC comment.  Shouldn’t let it get to me, I know, but it annoyed me. -shrug-

I am finishing up my doll for the private dotee doll/tarot card/playing card swap. Hope you are going to like it!  It’s my first dotee and I couldn’t find anywhere that said whether the tail & hanger were included in the 3-5 inches or not.  Hopefully, the latter because that’s how I did it and if the tail/hanger do count I haven’t made a dotee and I will feel bad.  I tried to go to Dot’s website and read the tutorial, but the links to it are broken.  Not to her site, but to the tutorial itself.

I had more to say when I started yesterday, but I think its all gone out of my head.

Oh, yes!

Got 2 Be Green!  Not sure if I mentioned there was a conference call with them coming up, but we had it a few days ago.  I am even happier working with them now that I’ve gotten to know them a little bit.  They seem like such nice people and they were so appreciative not to mention, open to our ideas and welcomed all feedback, even the negative.  It was just straight out of my imaginary book “How Things Should Be Done”.  In addition to the warm fuzziness, there may be more money-making opportunities from them, as well as chances to work as press and do interviews with important people.  Really exciting stuff happening and I am so glad I signed on with them.  If you click that link above, take a look around the site.  There’s lots of great information.  I know right now it’s maybe a bit tricky to navigate, but they are about to do a great revamp, so stay-tuned.

I think that’s all for me today.
